Evaporation in a ZeroEdge Aquarium is not as bad as you think. When we started the ZeroEdge project, yes evaporation was an issue. I could not get through One day of a tradeshow without topping off the tank at least twice. It was very discouraging ... so we pulled out of the market to figure out what we were doing wrong. Since then we have made significant improvements to the evaporation issue and now the units run amazing. I sometimes can get through a Three day tradeshow without topping off the tank at all ... OK ... maybe twice. Remember, any good reef tank evaporates at least a gallon a day and that is about what a ZeroEdge Aquarium does.
Salt creep is a constant battle for all saltwater aquariums and can be an electrical hazard as well. Most salt creep build-up occurs from very small air bubbles that fizz and pop at the waters surface. It is caused by the aquariums water return nozzle and surface agitation. Salt creep can also happen in enclosed canopy tops, overnight moisture builds up inside the canopy, then when the lights come on the moisture dries up leaving behind salt creep. The last place it seems to build-up is on and around the sump filter box, this occurs when water is not properly channeled, water crashes and bubbles into the sump causing a large amount of salt creep.
In a ZeroEdge Aquarium, the design makes it virtually impossible for salt creep to occur. These tanks have little or no salt creep due to the steady stream of overflowing water and gentle channeling of water to the sump filter box. The only salt creep that could occur is when the system is allowed to run low on water, this causes the pump to cavitate and intake air (air bubbles are then injected into the aquarium).
Fish are a hot topic. All experienced reef hobbyists know you are taking a risk with Wrasse and that great Long Nose Hawk in a reef tank. They are notorious jumpers, you'll find them in your overflows and occasionally in your sump, then you wonder "how did he get there?" So to answer that, yes, some fish are not recommended in an opened top tank that has overflowing water. Our experience with ZeroEdge Aquarium is not new ... we've been working on this project since 2003 and have tried many different fish in our systems. The fish we do recommend and have had great success are as follows: Tangs, Dwarf Angels, Rabbits, Cardinals, Clowns and Damsels. We do not recommend putting to many Damsels together as they are considered a rough crowd and someone is going over. However the Chromis is a Damsel that will do well in our larger systems.
The ZeroEdge Aquarium featured in our video has been running for about 2 years with a good variety of fish in it without problem. The owner had some problems early on with Mandarin fish and tank raised false clowns, such as ocellaris and percula. However, if you are inclined to have clownfish you can have Saddle, Cinnamon, Clarki, Seabay and Tomato Clowns in a ZeroEdge Aquarium.
